I have been in Riverside for nearly 3 weeks now, and while still very busy, not actually shooting much. I’ve been behind the computer editing wedding photos, a couple of portrait sessions and designing albums. We really only know one family down here and bless their hearts, they’ve been doing a great job of entertaining us! So, when my photography itch got especially bad, I emailed my friend and asked to do a few photos of her 2 year old daughter, Cambria. We went to Irvine Park in Orange and Amy insisted that I bring my son (who, while adorable, is a hindrance to my photo taking. haha) I felt bad keeping Reid away from a zoo and park, so I brought him with me. It was a hot day, the kids were hungry and only interested in playing on the jungle gym. I managed to pull Cambria aside for a few moments and snagged these shots. I’m not kidding, I had her for maybe 3 minutes before it was back to the playground and we called it a day. I was pleasantly surprised with what I came up with in such a short time, and of course, major kudos to Cambria for being a willing subject! Talk about a successful “mini session”!

August 18, 2010Marci & Her Boys | A Family Portrait Session!
August 14, 2010Marci was my last shoot before our move to Riverside. I warned her that it might take a me a bit longer than normal to get her photos back to her since we had to pack, move, un-pack….you know, all of the lovely things that come along with a 7 hour move. She assured me that it didn’t matter to her as long as we did her shoot! Marci is quite possibly the most patient person I’ve ever met. Thank you!
It was our last Sunday in Folsom and I decided to take them to Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael - a first for me. Enjoy your family portraits, Marci, and thank you for allowing me to be your photographer!
Do her boys look familiar? I did baby K’s newborn photos when he was just a few days old!
What’s up with your flash, woman?
July 13, 2010I shoot natural light 99% of the time for my portrait sessions, but if you ever see me at a wedding you will likely see me using a large flash unit mounted to my camera. It’s called a Speedlite. I notice guests looking at me funny and whispering, “…Why is the flash pointed straight up or behind her? Does she know what she is doing?” – okay, okay, not really….but I’m a mind reader and I know that’s what they are thinking
Ha!
Here is the thing about flash. Flash rarely looks good when pointed directly as someone’s face (unless it’s difused by an umbrella, softbox or something else). When you see a photographer using a flash that fires at the ceiling, a wall or other surface, they are likely “bouncing” the flash. The flash units that we use are quite powerful and will distribute light off of the surface that we are bouncing from onto the subject(s) that we are taking photographs of. Why do we do this instead of just pointing it forward? When pointed forward, the flash can and likely will blow out skin (no one wants to look like a ghost), create harsh shadows, and what we call pin-lights in the eyes. This is why we use an external flash instead of the one that pops up off of the camera (my camera and most other professional level cameras don’t even HAVE pop up flash for this very reason!) So, next time you see me or another photographer using a flash on our camera that isn’t pointed at a person, you will know why. There are a million and one other ways of using flash (off camera, special diffusers that mount on the flash while on the camera, the large brackets that pull the flash away from the actual camera body, etc) but I use bounce flash the most.
For good measure, here is a shot that utized the bounce-flash method. No harsh shadows, no overly bright spots on their faces, and nice, natural skintones and colors.
Michelle & Myke | Couple Photography
July 1, 2010Michelle and Myke have been married for almost 2 years but wanted some photos to display in their home besides their actual wedding photographs. I have been friends with Michelle and Myke for 6 years and Michelle was a bridesmaid in my wedding! I love this couple so much and they were so, so easy to photograph. They didn’t question my odd location choice (the new Palladio outdoor mall, still under construction, in Folsom) and made each of my pose requests completely natural and their own.
Thanks guys! You rock!
